Use your anger, sadness and grief to organize

White People We Have Work To Do

Many white people are waking up surprised, hurt, angry, sad and mourning that Harris has lost and Trump has been re-elected. I’m truly sad to see that the efforts to mobilize white women were not effective, and that 52% of white women and 59% of white men voted for Trump. Here are the cross-tabs (from Washington Post):

To me, these poll numbers reveal that there is lots of work that white folks need to do. If you woke up this morning shocked, angry, sad, grieving about these election results, then one of the best ways to use those emotions is to gather with other people doing the work. In other words, turn your mourning into organizing. Find other people who feel the way you do and want to change things.

An excellent place to find other humans who are organizing after this election is SURJ (Showing Up Racial Justice). Tonight at 8pmET/5pmPT there is an organizing call with SURJ and you can register here, and you can join from anywhere.

We have so much work to do, my fellow white folks. To do this work, we are going to have to find compassion and curiosity about are fellow humans in this country and beyond our borders. This is the time to find people you can organize with, anchor in your values, and figure out the work ahead.
